An in-depth investigation of the ways biology enables evolution

This book covers a variety of mechnisms in genetics and cellular biology from the point of view of larger topics in organismal evolution. Each topic demonstrates how biological systems have evolved in such a way as to facilitate evolution itself, by introducing robustness and flexibility around core conserved systems. It's dense and complicated, but accessible to an informed non-expert. I was particularly interested in how the dynamic instability of microtubules makes them robust against changes in the size and shape of cells. When I looked into modern research on the topic (the author mentioned that microtubule binding proteins were unknown at the time of publication) I found that the authors himself, Marc Kirschner, was cited as the person who discovered that phenomenon.
